IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Rehoming Requirements:

These requirements are only a guideline to what you should happen if you are thinking about rehoming a greyhound.

Once you have chosen a greyhound a home visit will be arranged. Please note that we do not rehome greyhounds after the 10th December until the New Year, so home visits near Christmas will be deferred to January.

We recommend that if you are out for more than 4 hours you should organise for a dog walker, friend or neighbour to check on the dog, let it out into the garden and spend a bit of time with it.

As the majority of our dogs have always lived in kennels they are familiar with a daily routine, the company of kennel staff, voluntary walkers and the company of their kennel mate.

The following points will be addressed but please feel free to talk through any other points or concerns during your home visit. Alternatively and or subsequently, we can address concerns at the kennels.

1. Garden security: Greyhounds are by their nature athletically built and some may have been training during their racing life to jump hurdles. With this in mind, garden fencing must be 5 to 6 foot high all around with no outlets. (Country Property alternate arrangements can be made eg: enclousures)

2. The dog must be housed inside the house and not in an outdoor kennel. Advice on bedding will be discussed, but a folded duvet complete with cover is a very good and inexpensive option.

3. Large windows/patio doors should be obscured with a blind or curtain as your dog will not be aware of the dangers of transparent glass and are likely to either walk or run through it.

4. Dietary needs: Complete foods are the most effective and efficient way of providing your greyhound with the proteins, vitamins and minerals he needs. Fresh meat or oily fish can also be added to their meal as well as vegetables and biscuits can aid your dogs digestion and help keep teeth healthy.

5. General greyhound care including nails, ears, coat, teeth, vaccinations and pest control.

6. Children and dogs: It is essential that special care be

taken when introducing any dog to a home with small children

and babies. Children should be educated to be calm and gentle

with the dog and to respect its needs and its sleeping area.

7. A donation of £100.00 is requested. This is non-refundable.

In line with the RGT strict neutering policy the dog will be neutered
and vaccinated, wormed and will have been given flea treatment.
Any dental work is also addressed when neutering is done. We also
give 4 weeks free insurance through Pet Plan.

8. We recommend that owners take out pet insurance. We offer 4
weeks free Pet Plan insurance effective from adoption date. It will
cover dogs of all ages.

9. We recommend socialising/training classes to help integrate your
new greyhound to the world where they will meet other breeds of dogs
in a controlled environment. Your vet may have a list of classes in your
area, otherwise check your local newspaper. Caution to muzzling is very
important while your dog is getting to know
its new world.

10. When choosing please remember our older dogs and black dogs.

Aftercare:

While some dogs find the transition from kennels to home life easy,

others find it confusing and overwhelming. As all are different there is

no set period of adjustment and an owners role and commitment is vital.

At Hillview we have a very strong support system to help you and your

new pet adjust to life together and are available for advice either at the

kennels (01404 861160) or by e-mail. Please do not be afraid or embarrassed

to ask for help if you and your dog need it. A rehoming pack with full details can

be obtained from the Retired Greyhound Trust head office tel: 020 8335 3016

or can be collected from the kennel.
