The South West Greyhound Gathering 2011:

Firstly I would like to thank everyone who attended our show especially those who travelled long distances from places as far as Weston Super Mare and Penzance to join in the celebration of greyhound ownership and showed their support for the Retired Greyhound Trust, secondly I would like to thank our volunteers who helped on the day including Racheal, Ally, Sally and Teresa as well as Marlene and Sam who were our judges for our family fun dog show.

In total we raised £516 for the Retired Greyhound Trust with approximatley 100 class entries and many more dogs joining for the sponsored greyhound walk who were sent off with a flyby from the Red Arrows team in formation, which was quiet spectacular to see.

It was extraordinary to see so many dogs getting on so well together which was highlighted by the amount of people attending who had only come along to find out more about the breed and were considered rehoming a retired greyhound.

In conclusion, the day was a great success thanks to the support of the RGT Head Office as well as the sponsorship from both James Wellbeloved and Valley Pet Crematorium and the attendance of the trade stands which we hope to grow next year.

So pencil it in your calendars for next year as the first Saturday in August however a more difined date will be published nearer the time.

Sprinter shows his support:

Former European and Commonwealth 400m Champion Iwan Thomas has joined forces with Greyhound UK and the RGT to help home greyhounds. Iwan, the latest celebrity to pledge support for the Retired Greyhound Trust, following fashion icon Twiggy said: "I'm a huge dog lover. Greyhounds are wonderful dogs so it's great to see a company of the stature of Greyhound get behind such a worthy charity. I would urge anyone who is considering a dog to think greyhounds - I certainly hope to adopt one in the next few months."

Britain's Obesession with Pets:

New research published today by the RGT and coach operator, Greyhound UK, proves that Britain is a nation of animal lovers. But despite this we still have more than 1,000 greyhounds who need loving new homes. According to the survey, 77% of pet owners think of their pet as an additional member of the family.  More than a quarter (29%) of pet owners think referring to themselves as 'Mummy' and 'Daddy' when talking to their pets is acceptable, while 32% said that including their pet in a family photo is acceptable.

From snuggling up on the sofa (60% of pet owners said that allowing a pet on the family couch is acceptable), to settling down for a night's sleep (36% said it's acceptable to allow their pet on their bed), Britain's pets seem to enjoy a pampered lifestyle. And more than a quarter (27%) of owners admitted that it was acceptable to take their pet on holiday. Almost a quarter (24%) of pet owners said it's acceptable to hold a funeral or burial ceremony for their pet, while one in seven (13%) said that planning to leave provisions in their will for their pet is acceptable. The survey was jointly commissioned by the RGT and Greyhound UK, the luxury, low cost coach operator. Greyhound UK has partnered with the charity to raise awareness of the 1,000 greyhound dogs that are without homes in the UK today.

Ivor Stocker from RGT said: "It's clear from the survey that Britain is a nation of animal lovers. However, despite greyhounds being incredibly loving and easy to look after (two 20 minute walks per day) we still have so many that need homes.

"I hope that by working with the world's most famous coach brand, Greyhound UK, we can better support our wonderful network of volunteers and encourage more people to consider providing a home for these beautiful dogs," he added. Managing Director of Greyhound UK, Alex Warner, said: "The iconic, sleek, Greyhound logo is one of the most recognised in the world.  In the UK, we want to give something back to our four legged friends that have done so much for our business.  We are proud to adopt the Retired Greyhound Trust as our official charity partner."

Give a dog a home:

Model icon Twiggy is lending her support to an urgent appeal by the RGT to find loving new families for our homeless greyhounds. The Retired Greyhound Trust is facing a tough year after homing figures for 2010 were more than 500 down on last year.

We have nearly 1,000 dogs in kennels across the country waiting for new homes and many more who have recently retired and are waiting for a space in their kennels. Last year we homed 4,200 greyhounds.

Twiggy said: "I am devastated to hear about the Retired Greyhound Trust's struggle with homing figures. I would urge anyone who is considering a dog to think greyhounds.

"The sooner the charity can find good homes for those in kennels then the sooner they can free up space for the many more who are on the waiting list."

Twiggy added: "Greyhounds make fantastic pets. They undergo a transformation when they leave the track. They turn from speed machines to docile couch potatoes who love to loll around and get fussed. All they want is a loving family or owner to look after them. I hope there are families out there who can help."

Ivor Stocker, Retired Greyhound Trust Director, said: "The homing figures for 2010 are really disappointing for our hard working volunteers and bad news for our greyhounds.

"Greyhounds have very individual personalities and our volunteers, who are based in our 72 kennels across the country, have years of experience homing them. They can match the right dog to the right individual or family to ensure everyone lives happily ever after."

Contrary to popular belief, most greyhounds get on well with other pets, including other dogs and cats. More and more retired couples and older people who are on their own are taking on retired greyhounds as companions. The fact that they only require two twenty minute walks a day suits many people whose circumstances mean they can't get out for long walks several times a day. All the dogs are looking for is a loving family who will be rewarded with the devotion of a loving companion.
